“I started really concentrating on my boards and working on my equipment in 2008. Since that time big wave surfboards have changed completely. They used to come with the narrower outline, a lot of rocker and ligtweighted” says Grant “Twig” Baker.

Twiggy (Durban, South Africa, 1973) has been in the front row of big wave surfing since his breakthrough win in Mavericks in 2006. In 2014 this is Twig’s vision on his equipment: “With the new boards, fuller nose, a little more volume, wider tail to loosen them up, the new fin placement and rocker line, boards are easier to ride in big waves.”

“For the average guy it has made the boards a lot easier to ride and big waves more accessible. And for the good guy, it has given them a platform to really start performing in big waves (huge waves).”

Grant “Twig” Baker has put some time in the factory this autumn of 2014. In between big wave talks, foam and shaping hours, Twig has put the boards to test in Meñakoz. He has shared some amazing sessions (both small and big) with local surfers from the Basque Country. This is Twig’s quiver for Europe. All tested in European waves and well approved by the ASP Big Wave World Champ. It’s now available in different sizes:

– 7.0″ x 19.50′ x 3.00 rd – Litres 40.00 at 4,0 kilos – 6 + 6 / 6 – Future Fins combo

– 8.0″ x 20.00′ x 3.25 rd – Litres 53.66 at 6,0 kilos – 6 + 6 / 6 for Meñakoz Small – Future Fins combo

– 9.0″ x 21.00′ x 3.50 rp – Litres 66.71 at 8,0 kilos – 6 + 6 / 6 + 6 for Meñakoz Big – Future Fins combo

Pukas and Twiggy are excited to have Mikel Agote onboard as the official shaper for this iconic collaboration. Mikel is a big wave charger himself and has been doing the biggest rhino-chasers for the last decade. With all the insights from Twig, Mikel has now been able to step up his game and manufacture some of the most beautiful and best guns in the game.

Gabriel Medina is the 2014 ASP World Champion on Pukas Surfboards. Becomes the second youngest World Champion in the history of surfing.

//  Gabriel Medina is the 2014 ASP WORLD CHAMP

Pukas Surf Gabriel Medina 2014 ASP World Champ

//  Gabriel Medina is the 2014 ASP WORLD CHAMP

Gabriel Medina (born 22 December 1993 in Sao Sebastiao, Sao Paulo) is surfing’s 2014 World Champ at just 20 years of age. Gabriel Medina is the first Brazilian ever to claim the World Title. The wonderkid has trusted on the quality of the Pukas Surfboards made in the Basque Country since he was 14.

Gabriel’s Pukas surfboards, shaped and designed mostly by J. Cabianca, have been carefully handcrafted one at a time by a team of experts (great surfers and fans themselves). Each board is individually designed to match Gabriel’s skills to the singularities of each wave on tour; from tahitian dredgins huge scary barrels to tricky french beachbreaks. For the last event of the ASP 2014 WCT Tour, Gabriel has chosen a touch of Hawaian magic with Pukas Surfboards shaped by Wade Tokoro.

This bespoke process undergoes at the Pukas factory in the nearby area of San Sebastian, Spain. Located at a legit surf paradise surrounded of waves of all kinds, the Basque Country has seen Pukas developing surfboards for more than 30 years now.

To become the youngest titleholder ever, Gabriel has claimed wins in three ASP WCT events (out of a total of 11) during 2014:

1. Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, Australia. Gabriel topped seasoned vets like Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow, all of them australian regular footers, The victory was historic in a number of ways. In the event’s 14-year history, a Brazilian had never won it. Additionally, the last time a goofy-footer claimed the podium was Mick Lowe in 2004.

2. Fiji Pro. Gabriel Medina took his second win of the season further proving that he is good at all kinds of waves.

3. Billabong Pro Tahiti. This event had been touted as the best contest in the history of the sport of surfing. Gabriel Medina claimed it over 11 x World Champ Kelly Slater in clean, perfect, macking Chopes. This is what Gabriel had to say after his win:. “Kelly is a legend of surfing. This is the best feeling ever. The waves were perfect and big. This feeling is amazing. I don’t know how to describe it. I love surfing, I love what I’m doing right now.“I want to thank ASP for putting this event on here, I love this wave now more. Thanks to the water patrol to keep us safe. I’m really happy to be part of this.”

Gabriel Medina and Pukas Surf announce they have ended their 6-year partnership.

THANK YOU GABRIEL

By common consent, Pukas Surf and Gabriel have ended their 6 year relationship in which they have become surfing’s 2014 ASP World Champ.

Everyone at Pukas thanks Gabriel and his family for their priceless contribution on both a personal and professional level. For decades Pukas has thrilled with high-performance surfing and found in Gabriel the perfect partner to enjoy surfing until climax.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Pukas Surf. They have supported me since the beginning of my career” said Gabriel. “They have encouraged me during good times and bad times, and granted the structure needed to achieve my biggest dream; The World Championship.”

Gabriel Medina is the first Brazilian to ever claim the World Title and the second youngest in the history of surfing. He has trusted on the quality of Pukas Surfboards made in the Basque Country, Spain, since he was 14. Surfboards that are handcrafted one at a time by a team of experts that will now miss the talent and feedback of such an incredible surfer.

Gabriel Medina will now join hawaian Sunny Garcia as the second surfer to ever win the World Championship with Pukas Surfboards. Sunny Garcia was part of the Pukas team for over 20 years and achieved the ASP World Championship in 2000.

Pukas will now continue to expand his influence in the surf community with boards of all kinds, from big rhino-chasers to high-performance boards with an amazing club of shapers, team riders, ambassadors and workers that simply love surfing too much. With the same passion and drive as in 1973, the year it all started.

Johnny Cabianca (BRA), who has been shaping most of the boards for Gabriel, has been part of the Pukas Shaping Program for over 15 years. Johnny decided to leave Europe and start his own factory in Brasil, where he is originally from, starting January 2015. He will now continue manufacturing surfboards for Gabriel on a 100% brasilian project of his own. Pukas Surf wishes Johnny success in his future endeavours.

XXXL Puerto Escondido – Board Breakdown

Twig, Natxo and Aritz have tested the Pukas Twig quiver in extraterrestrial conditions

Puerto Escondido vs. Pukas Twig quiver

It has been the deadliest Puerto Escondido (Mainland Mexico) that locals have ever witnessed. Mark Healey claimed it was twice as big as the biggest day he had ever seen. Twig had a beating that had him underwater against the bottom for a while (with his vest inflated). Natxo Gonzalez had one of the biggest sets of the day on the head.

Good news is Grant “Twig” Baker & Natxo Gonzalez not only survived, they actually scored some pretty crazy barrels, some of the best barrels theirs eyes have ever seen. The three of them have been testing the Pukas Twig models shaped by Mikel Agote. Here you will find all the details.

Kepa Acero breaks down the quiver that fits his traveling musts: the Pukas BASATI quiver

Pukas BASATI quiver

Kepa Acero is very well known for this latest trips. Solo mode, full of joy and empty pockets, he is only allowed to travel with stuff he can put on backpacks and light board covers. But when it comes to a trip that can put you to test on conditions that vary from 1ft. to dreadging barrels, you can’t afford to run a short quiver with wrong shapes.

After lots of testing, talking and tripping, Kepa Acero and Axel Lorentz nailed the shapes: two Pukas Original Sixtyniners and a Pukas BabySwallow would suit Kepa’s idea.

Kepa wanted to have Angela Alonso and her crew involved this time. Angela and her studio Happyending designed the art on the boards.

With the shape and the art done, Kepa is now ready to jump into his next adventure with a quiver he describes as: “the most versatile quiver, thought for light travelers like myself.”

Pukas Surf Peter Daniels RIP

Peter Daniels 1949-2015

Shaping legend dies at the age of 66

Shaping star Peter Daniels (ZAF) has died in Spain’s Basque Country, aged 66.

Tributes from the world of surfing have already flooded in from friends all over the world. Peter has been part of the Pukas family for over 20 years. His shapes have been rock’n’rolled by top surfers such as Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, Sunny Garcia and many more; Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson, Frankie Oberholzer, Aritz Aranburu, Shingo Nakamura…

He thrilled for high-performance surfing and inspired lots of generations of shapers. Born in Durban (ZAF), Peter would call home his beloved South Africa, Oiartzun (where the Pukas factory is based in the Basque Country of Spain), Japan and Brasil.

Too well loved to ever be forgotten.

Peter Daniels is a surf contest fanatic and admirer of high-performance surfing.

His duties put him to work with the very best surfers in the world during his career, and this pictures are hanging on the wall of the Pukas factory. Kelly Slater, Sunny Garcia, Tom Curren… a Surfing Mag’s poster featuring Sunny hosts the best quote ever “To Peter, thanks for this board it made me lots of money! Sunny.”

The list goes on and on, from Japanese surfers to basque frothers, from Southafrican pros to Hawaiian hot shots.

Peter is in a constant tour that takes him every year to places he call home; Japan, Brazil, South Africa and the Basque Country where he spends most of the time with us.

Words by Matt Biolos (USA)

“Year after year I’ve worked with Olatu and Pukas, surfed a lot of the local waves, mingled with the local people and there has always been a link between myself and Pukas.

After almost 20 years of traveling the Basque Country, and shaping at PUKAS, we finally made our link official and have designed this collaboration model…. The Link.

We thought it would be fun to make this link official and do a special little project…a special board. Specifically for the small punchy beach breaks in this area. Super fun and skatey, but high performance as well. Not a cruiser, or flat glider, but a board with some rocker and some concave, a board that a good surfer can throw around and up into the lip and surf kind of radical, but in a small, fun, beach break kind of way.”

From the start I have always sorta been known for pushing the idea of wider shorter boards, but always trying to do it with performance in mind, not just fashion or retro.

So with The Link we started with my ShortRound, and wanted to race it up. We pulled in the nose and added more tail rocker to fit in these dumpy, quick waves. To work with the rocker, we added a lot more concave from the center back through the fins. The concave gets up and going and fast, as well as increases rail curve, allowing for quick radical direction changes.

“We are building The LINK in two techs. First, we are launching it with our patented “Carbon Wrap” Technology. Stringer-less EPS with a Carbon Fiber frame that “wraps” The rails in a strategic point, creating a lively and electric feeling flex, engineered for maximum performance in small surf. In addition to the CarbonWrap, we are building The Link in the tried and true, proven performance of PU/PE construction.

Pukas x Matt Biolos // The Link Size Chart

5’0″ to 6’4″. The sizes and volumes seems to flow pretty well. Up to about 5’10” I stayed pretty HP and minimalistic with the dims. Then around 5’11” I made more significant jumps in dims and volume for bigger customers. The volume numbers for each board are clean and simple, and are spread out evenly. I feel comfortable with these.

When sized properly, with the right amount of volume, it could be anything from a 5’2 rip stick, for a young ripper to throw airs and blow the tail….On up to 40 liters of Domestic high performance carving and snapping to keep the middle aged guy, father with kids out there having fun…..instead of giving up and riding an oversized boat or a flat rocker pig.

The Pukas Parachute is a high performance surfboard hidden in an alternative package

Don’t be fooled the alternative look of this board. It has a lot of hold, a lot of drive and is very maneuverable in almost any type of surf. Great all rounder for people who are bored of their everyday shortboard.

The Pukas Parachute is a high performance board in an alternative package. It has a pulled in nose for easy transitions, counterbalanced by its unique tail. It features an extremely wide 8 inch straight swallow tail for intense speed and increased spray throughout turns that works just fine thanks to its key fin placement.

Fins are further back than usual, making the board very quick off combined with performance rails for optimum control. It has four precisely placed belly channels on the bottom which help the board bite into the wave and guide water throughout the fins faster, without making the shape tracky.

The Pukas Parachute is the model Taz is most excited about for 2016. It’s named after Taz’s favourite hobby outside of surfing which is SkyDiving.

Pukas Juicy’s Info

This is the first board from a High-Performance Collection developed by Axel Lorentz compound by 3 surfboards; The Pukas Juicy, the Pukas Tasty and the Pukas Spicy.

A high-performance approach to shit waves begs for this board.

Compared to the Tasty, the rocker is flatter and the outline is wider.

French beachies have been the inspiration source for the shaper Axel
Lorentz.

A full concave bottom f inishing to vee on the tail and boxier rails af ford plenty of speed without scarif ying manoeuvrability. This board is fast, responsive and easy to surf with.

Pukas Water Lion’s Info

My initial concept for the water lion is for solid waves here in Europe, with the first two waves coming to mind: Hossegor and Mundaka. Those waves inspired this board´s design.

Basically the whole concept is to fill the gap between your performance short board and your step up by adding performance to your step up. Many riders have the GERR as a go to short board and the CARRERA as the recommended step up board. Between those two is the WATER LION, designed to start working well in 3 foot (head high) proper hollow waves and can definitely push it to 6-8 foot surf (double to more than double over head) no problem.

The outline has same concept as the CARRERA with the fuller front end for paddling, which is what you need to get out and into bigger surf. Although as the tail is pulled in to handle larger surf it ends in a baby squash tail. This tail was influenced from one of my shaping heroes, Pat Rawson. I have always been attracted by the baby squash tail that he used to do in the 80s and 90s, so this is a little homage to him. What the baby squash tail does opposed to the round pin is it brings two pivot points to the tip of the tail to allow the board to go rail to rail quicker.

This board will ride the barrel well, then go on the shoulder to hit the lip and do round houses. It is going to be a lot easier to turn than your typical step up would be while maintaining the characteristics to pull into the barrel well and help you make the drop.

Who is CxCx?

Surfing all styles of boards, back country snowboarding, vintage motorcycles and cars, fishing, golf, and seeing live music is what best defines Chris Christenson.

Shaping highlights: Working for and shaping side by side with Dick Brewer and Skip Frye. Greg Long winning the Eddie and Waterman of the Year, lots of XXL winners awarded on his boards, Tribute to the Masters contestant, 2 second place finishes in Reef Board Build Offs’… but probably the most important the recognition and credit he gets from the best surfboard builders and the orders he gets from the best surfers in the world.

Extract of an interview with Chris Christenson for Huck’s Magazine’s 10th anniversary

“I used to do surf contests back then, so I competed on my own boards. Then my friends started using them. And then their friends. By my sophomore year in university, I had a full-on business going”, says Chris.

Nearly 25 years later, Chris has shaped over 22.000 surfboards from his base in San Diego, customizing styles for elite figures such as Greg Long and Brad Gerlach. “Building boards for international competition can be as detail-orientated as making parachutes for a living”, he says. There is no marging for error.

“You are kind of taking someone’s life into your hands. But I enjoy that par of it. I always liken it to a high-level athlete where you’ve got to perform in the last few seconds of a game. Whereas others might be nervous and make mistakes, I’m the one saying, “gimme the ball”. That’s a good place to be”.

The Californian doesn’t believe in taking shortcuts in quality to save money. Instead he keeps his prices fixed, maintains the same diehard staff and let’s the work speak for itself. “To be a successful board builder with a career that’s going to last means working your ass off. I don’t think people realize what goes into it”.

“Independence means everything to me”, says Chris. “Sometimes when I want to get in creative mode, I’ll purposely shut myself off to the surfing world. No magazines, no movies, no surf shops, I just try not to give a shit what anyone else is doing so I won’t be influenced by it”.

“Everyone needs passion in their life – everyone needs something,” he says. “But I feel like no matter what art, sport or industry you’re into, it’s healthy to just step out of it and get inspired by other things. It only seems to open more doors whn you go back”.
